Your Day-by-Day Journey

A calm winter route through Tokyo’s edges, coastal towns, historic rail cities, deep-snow valleys, northern ports, and the open streets of Hokkaido.

DAY 1 of 13

Tokyo: arrival & Shibuya after dark

Welcome to winter in Japan. Your first night begins beneath the lights of Tokyo. Step into Shibuya with thousands of people moving around you, wander through colourful Harajuku, then watch the city turn from daylight to neon from high above at Shibuya Sky.

As the temperature drops, follow the lanterns into Shinjuku’s tiny yokocho alleys — little izakayas glowing warmly against the winter night. There’s a Harajuku crepe, dinner together and that unmistakable first-night excitement when somewhere you’ve imagined for years is suddenly real. And this is only the beginning — tomorrow, we head north towards the snow.

Highlights

Shibuya Crossing · Harajuku & Omotesando · Shibuya Sky at sunset · Shinjuku’s yokocho alleys

Tokyo: old streets, markets & neon worlds

Tokyo has a habit of making you feel like you’ve stepped into three different cities before lunch. Begin in Asakusa, with incense drifting through Senso-ji, shopkeepers opening along Nakamise and something warm and sweet in your hands as you taste fresh mochi.

Then the city changes around you. Squeeze through the lively stalls of Ameyoko, lose yourself among the neon and arcades of Akihabara, and finally step barefoot into teamLab Planets, surrounded by water, light and floating flowers. Old temples to digital dreams — somehow, Tokyo makes all of it feel completely normal.

Highlights

Senso-ji & Asakusa · Nakamise · Fresh mochi · Ameyoko Market · Akihabara · teamLab Planets

Kawagoe or Tokyo Disney: choose your Japan

Today, Japan can be whatever you imagined it would be. Step into Kawagoe, where dark wooden warehouses line the old merchant streets and the sound of the Toki no Kane bell carries above the rooftops. Wander through Candy Alley, something sweet in hand, and spend a few hours in a Japan that feels surprisingly far from Tokyo.

Or forget old Japan entirely and spend the day inside the magic of Tokyo Disneyland. Two completely different Japan dreams — and today, the choice is yours.

Highlights

Kawagoe’s Edo streets · Kurazukuri warehouse district · Toki no Kane · Candy Alley · Kita-in Temple

OR CHOOSE TOKYO DISNEY
Tokyo Disneyland · Full day at the park · Rejoin the group in Tokyo

Aizu-Wakamatsu: samurai towns & snow trains

This is where Quiet Winters truly begins. Leave Tokyo behind and watch the landscape turn white as we head into Tohoku’s snow country. Walk between the thatched houses of Ouchijuku, snow piled along the old road, then step into the samurai world of Aizu-Wakamatsu, from Tsuruga Castle to the extraordinary wooden spiral of Sazaedo.

And then, simply sit by the window. The Tadami Line carries you through snowy valleys, frozen rivers and tiny stations disappearing into the white. Tokyo suddenly feels very far away — and winter Japan has properly begun.

Highlights

Snow-covered Ouchijuku · Tsuruga Castle · Sazaedo · Tadami Line through snow country

Sendai: a northern city pause

After days of deep snow, Sendai gives you a little room to breathe. Walk beneath towering cedars to Zuihoden, where the brilliantly decorated resting place of samurai lord Date Masamune feels almost hidden in the winter forest.

Then let the day loosen up. Wander Sendai’s covered arcades, find somewhere warm for coffee, try something local and enjoy an evening without needing to chase the next sight. Outside, it’s winter in northern Japan. Inside, there’s good food, warm cafés and nowhere you need to rush — before tomorrow takes us straight back into the mountains.

Highlights

Zuihoden & its cedar forest · Central Sendai · Covered shopping arcades · Local food & neighbourhood life

Yamadera & Yamagata: 1,000 steps into the snow

Today, we earn the view. Ride a little local train into the mountains, step out into the snow and look up — somewhere above you, hidden among the cedars, is Yamadera. Then start climbing.

Nearly 1,000 snow-covered steps wind higher through the forest, past old temple gates and frozen mountain paths. Legs burning, cold air in your lungs, you finally emerge beside the temples of Risshaku-ji, with the winter valley opening far below. It’s cold, exhilarating and completely worth it — the kind of Japan story you’ll be telling long after you’re home.

Highlights

Local train to Yamadera · 1,000-step winter climb · Snow-covered cedar forest · Risshaku-ji · Mountain views · Winter journey to Yamagata

Zao & Ginzan Onsen: snow monsters to lantern light

This is winter Japan at its wildest. Rise into the frozen world of Mt Zao, where the temperature drops, the wind cuts through the mountain and entire trees disappear beneath layers of ice and snow. From the ropeway, watch the famous Juhyo — Zao’s Snow Monsters emerge from the white below. This is cold you feel in your bones, and a landscape you may never experience anywhere else.

Then comes the contrast. Descend from the frozen mountain and travel through deep snow to Ginzan Onsen, arriving as daylight fades and gas lamps begin glowing between its wooden ryokan. From one of Japan’s harshest winter landscapes to one of its most beautiful — this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of day.

Highlights

Zao Ropeway · Juhyo Snow Monsters · Deep-winter Mt Zao · Ginzan Onsen at dusk · Gas-lit ryokan streets

Aomori to Hakodate: crossing into Hokkaido

Today, we keep chasing winter north — to Aomori, the world’s snowiest city. Step out into streets buried beneath deep winter snow, then into the brilliant colour of the Nebuta Museum, where enormous illuminated warriors and mythical creatures glow above you.

Then board the train again and leave Honshu behind, crossing beneath the Tsugaru Strait through the Seikan Tunnel. When you emerge on the other side, you’re in Hokkaido. Step out into the northern cold, snow around you and Tokyo hundreds of kilometres behind — you’ve crossed into Japan’s great northern island, and suddenly the journey feels bigger than ever.

Highlights

Winter journey through northern Tohoku · Aomori waterfront · Nebuta Museum WA RASSE · Seikan Tunnel · Crossing into Hokkaido · Arrival in Hakodate

Hakodate: port streets & winter lights

Your first morning in Hokkaido begins beside the sea. Wake up in Hakodate, wander through its lively morning market, then climb the old sloping streets of Motomachi, with the winter harbour appearing between historic buildings. Later, warm up among the cafés and red-brick warehouses of the waterfront as the cold sea air settles over the city.

Then wait for darkness. Ride the ropeway up Mt Hakodate and step out into the freezing night — below you, thousands of lights shimmer between two black coastlines. Cold air on your face, Hokkaido glowing beneath you, and one of those views you’ll want to stand beside for just a little longer.

Highlights

Hakodate Morning Market · Motomachi & hillside streets · Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses · Winter waterfront · Mt Hakodate Ropeway & night view

Hakodate to Sapporo: across winter Hokkaido

Today, the journey itself is part of the adventure. Settle beside the window and watch Hokkaido unfold outside — snow-covered towns, forests and stretches of winter coastline slipping past as the train carries you across Japan’s northern island.

Hours later, the wilderness gives way to lights. Arrive in Sapporo, drop your bags and step back outside — snow underfoot, Odori Park glowing and the neon of Susukino waiting after dark. Then follow the steam into Ramen Yokocho for a hot bowl of ramen. After days of travelling north through snow country, you’ve made it to Sapporo — cold outside, warm ramen in front of you and Hokkaido’s winter capital all around.

Highlights

Winter rail journey across Hokkaido · Arrival in Sapporo · Odori Park · Tanukikoji · Susukino after dark · Ramen Yokocho

Zenibako & Otaru: snow by the sea

Today feels like stepping into a Japanese love story. Begin at Zenibako, where little streets disappear beneath the snow and the Sea of Japan stretches grey and endless beyond them. Then follow the coast to Otaru — nostalgic merchant buildings, little cafés, glass shops and snow falling around old streets that somehow feel familiar, even on your first visit.

Stay until dusk. As the Otaru Canal turns blue and the gas lamps begin glowing against the snow, you might recognise the feeling from Japanese films and dramas like Netflix’s First Love. Walk slowly, find someone’s hand to hold — or simply fall a little in love with winter Japan itself.

Highlights

Zenibako & the winter Sea of Japan · Otaru Canal · Historic warehouses · Sakaimachi Street · Hokkaido sweets · Otaru after dark

FEBRUARY JOURNEYS
Return to Sapporo for the Snow Festival after dark, with enormous snow sculptures illuminated across Odori Park.

Sapporo: winter capital

There’s a reason Sapporo has sometimes been called the Paris of the East. Wide boulevards beneath the snow, warm cafés hidden from the cold, city lights and long winter evenings give Japan’s northern capital a romance all its own.

Spend the day between snow-covered Maruyama Park, quiet Hokkaido Shrine and the streets of central Sapporo. Then stay out as darkness falls — Odori Park glowing, Susukino alive and snow catching the city lights around you. In February, the Snow Festival makes it even more magical. Tonight, find a little love in Sapporo — for someone, for the city, or simply for winter in Japan.

Highlights

Snow-covered Maruyama Park · Hokkaido Shrine · Odori Park · Tanukikoji & Susukino · Hokkaido food · Farewell dinner

FEBRUARY JOURNEYS
Walk among the enormous sculptures of the Sapporo Snow Festival, then return after dark when snow, ice and city lights transform Odori Park.

DECEMBER JOURNEYS
Wander through Sapporo’s winter illuminations, with Odori Park and the city centre glowing after dark.

Sapporo: winter farewell

One last morning in the snow. Wake up in Sapporo, step outside into that crisp Hokkaido air and take a final walk through streets that, only a few days ago, were completely unfamiliar. Find somewhere warm for coffee, pick up a few Hokkaido treats and watch the snow fall one more time before it’s time to leave.

From Tokyo’s neon to Tohoku’s deep snow, frozen mountains, lantern-lit onsen towns and the winter coast of Hokkaido, we’ve followed winter north across Japan together. And somewhere along the way, we hope you fell a little in love with it.

Highlights

One last morning in Sapporo · Coffee & Hokkaido treats · Time for last-minute shopping · Departure at your own pace

Hi, I’m Abhay. My relationship with Japan began while I was studying at the University of Cambridge and has grown through years of returning, exploring and building friendships across the country. What keeps drawing me back are the neighbourhoods, conversations, traditions and unexpected moments you rarely find on an itinerary — the side of Japan that has shaped how we design every Beyond Tokyo journey.

Hi, I’m Shivani. I’m a dental surgeon by profession, which probably explains why I notice the little things. Over years of travelling through Japan, I’ve come to love the thoughtfulness woven into everyday life — from the way food is presented to the care behind the smallest interactions. On our journeys, I bring that same attention to the people travelling with us — making sure everyone feels comfortable, cared for and free to simply enjoy Japan.

Solo & Women Travelers

We keep the group small, stay in safe, central neighborhoods, and move mostly by trains. Your trip lead is with you throughout — someone to guide, translate, and help whenever needed. You’ll have your own space when you want it, and friendly company when you don’t want to be alone.

Around 80% of our travelers join solo or as pairs — the group always feels friendly, relaxed, and easy to connect with.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Yes. Many of our travellers join solo.

With a maximum of 10 travellers, the group is small, friendly, and easy to settle into. Your trip lead is with you throughout the journey, so you'll always have support when you need it—while still enjoying plenty of time and space to explore independently.

Yes.

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, and our journeys are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming for solo female travellers. We stay in safe, central neighbourhoods, travel together between destinations, and women are always paired with other women for twin-share accommodation.

No.

Your trip lead takes care of navigation, tickets, restaurant ordering, and day-to-day communication throughout the journey. You'll naturally pick up a few simple Japanese phrases along the way—but there's absolutely no expectation that you speak the language.

We stay in exceptionally top-tier, clean, comfortable, and well-located hotels in safe, central neighbourhoods with excellent access to public transport and local dining.

Hotel rooms in Japan are typically more compact than in Europe or North America, but they're modern, efficient, and exactly where you want to be.

We regularly welcome vegetarian, vegan, Jain, no-egg, and other dietary preferences.

Your trip lead will help with restaurant selection, ordering, and recommendations throughout the journey. While strict Jain options can be more limited in smaller towns, we'll always do our best to help you find suitable meals.

Expect around 8,000–12,000 steps on most days.

We walk at a comfortable pace, take regular breaks, and use Japan's excellent train network to travel between destinations. This is designed to be an enjoyable journey—not a race from one attraction to the next.

Visa decisions are made solely by the Embassy or Consulate of Japan.

We provide a comprehensive visa document checklist and optional one-to-one visa guidance to help you prepare your application.

If your visa application is unsuccessful, refunds will be handled in accordance with our Cancellation & Refund Policy.

Absolutely. Families are always welcome.

Japan is one of the safest, cleanest, and most family-friendly countries in the world.

Our journeys involve regular train travel, public transport, changing hotels and moderate daily walking. Children who are comfortable travelling and exploring tend to adapt very well.

There isn’t a fixed minimum age.

Every child is different. A well-travelled 4-year-old may be perfectly comfortable on the journey, while another child may find the pace more demanding. Parents know their children best, so we leave that decision with you.

Little travellers are always welcome.

We don’t believe parents should be financially penalised for bringing a little one along. So we keep our child pricing simple, thoughtful and fair.

Pricing is based on the child’s age at the time of travel.

Under 6 years:

  • Complimentary when travelling with two adults as the only child. They share existing bedding, and all journey entries and experiences are included. A separate transport seat is not reserved or guaranteed.
  • 50% of the adult price when travelling with one adult, or when the family is travelling with more than one child. This includes their own transport seat and all journey inclusions, while sharing existing bedding.

6 years to under 12 years:

  • 70% of the adult price, including their own bed, transport seat and all journey inclusions.

12 years and above:

  • Standard adult pricing applies.

A note on family rooms

Room and bedding arrangements depend on each hotel’s occupancy policy. If an additional room or different room configuration is required, we’ll always let you know about any additional cost before you book.
