A Day in Gujo Hachiman

Our Notes
This summer, we made Takayama our home for two weeks. It's my favourite city in Japan, and we wanted to spend that time exploring the smaller towns around it.
Gujo Hachiman had been on our list for years.
Getting there wasn't particularly straightforward. Our bus dropped us beside a highway, almost three kilometres from the town. With no easy connection, we walked along the Nagara River in the summer heat until we finally reached the old streets.
And what a lovely little town it turned out to be.
Rivers seemed to run everywhere, past traditional wooden houses and beneath little bridges. Children were walking home from school, wind chimes rang outside houses, and we found a small shop preparing gohei mochi.
But what stayed with us most was how water was woven into everyday life. From the fish-filled canals of Igawa Lane to the historic Sogi Spring, and Yash spending what felt like forever playing in the river.
We didn't come for the castle or a checklist of attractions. We came to experience the town itself.
