Eight story-filled days across Kyoto’s valleys, forests and riversides.
DAY 1 of 8
Welcome to Kyoto — one of the world’s great cities, and for the next week, yours to slowly discover. Begin among the wooden streets of Gion, follow the willow-lined Shirakawa Canal, then wander through temple grounds and along the shaded Philosopher’s Path as the afternoon begins to soften.
By evening, find a spot beside the Kamo River, where locals gather along the banks, friends share drinks and the summer heat slowly gives way to dusk. Then come together for our welcome dinner — your first long Kyoto evening, with an entire week still ahead of you.

Today, we follow two traditions Kyoto has spent centuries perfecting. Begin in Uji, where tea has shaped the landscape and everyday life for generations. Walk beside the river, step into Byōdō-in, then head beyond town into the surrounding tea country, where rows of green fields stretch across the hills.
Sit down together over matcha and gyokuro, before trading tea fields for the old brewery streets and willow-lined canals of Fushimi. Step inside a sake brewery, raise a glass together and taste another side of Kyoto — from morning tea to evening sake, with centuries of tradition in between.

Today, Kyoto begins to feel more like countryside than city. Head north into Ōhara, where vegetable fields, old farmhouses and forested mountains surround the moss-covered gardens of Sanzen-in. Follow a quiet country road deeper into the valley towards Jakko-in — the kind of little journey that makes you wonder how this can still be Kyoto.
Hours later, find yourself back beneath the ancient trees of Tadasu-no-Mori, before ending beside the Kamo River, shoes off and summer evening settling over the city. Somewhere between the mountain fields and the river, Kyoto starts feeling less like somewhere you’re visiting — and more like somewhere you’ve begun to know.

There are days when Kyoto feels almost impossibly beautiful. This is one of them. Start high in the cedar-covered mountains of Takao, where old temple halls hide among the trees and the clear Kiyotaki River runs through the valley below. At Jingo-ji, send a tiny clay kawarake sailing over the mountains — a centuries-old wish carried into the forest.
Later, Kyoto slowly becomes more familiar again: the quiet perfection of Ryōan-ji, old temple grounds and, finally, Kinkaku-ji shimmering gold across its pond. Forest paths, mountain air, Zen gardens and gold — the Kyoto you came dreaming about.

This is the kind of day that makes you fall for summer in Japan. Escape Kyoto’s heat for the forested mountains of Kibune, where lunch is served on a kawadoko platform directly above the cool, rushing river. Sit together beneath the trees, listening to the water below — summer in Kyoto suddenly feels like exactly where you should be.
Then cross Mount Kurama through cedar forests, old shrines and tangled tree-root paths. And waiting on the other side: Kurama Onsen, where you can sink into the warm water with green mountains around you. River lunch, sacred forests, a mountain crossed on foot and an onsen at the end — some days simply get Japan right.

Just when you think you understand Kyoto, we take you somewhere that barely feels like Kyoto at all. Travel north to the Sea of Japan, where the pine-covered sweep of Amanohashidate stretches across the water before continuing to Ine, a tiny fishing village where traditional funaya boathouses sit right at the water’s edge.
Then follow the coast deeper into the Tango Peninsula, where green hills give way to cliffs, islands and open sea. Standing above Tango Matsushima, with the coastline disappearing into the distance, comes the surprise: this wild, beautiful corner of Japan is Kyoto too.

After a week of discovering Kyoto, today brings you closer to the people and traditions that have kept it alive. Stand surrounded by the extraordinary 1,001 Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō, then step into Nishijin, where generations of artisans have woven some of Japan’s most beautiful textiles.
Later, wander through Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest geisha district, before dressing in kimono and sitting down for tea. Then comes a fitting final evening — watching a Geisha / Maiko perform just a few feet away, followed by dinner together and one last night in a city that hopefully feels a little more like yours now.

One last Kyoto morning. Go back for a favourite coffee, walk beside the river one more time, or pick up the tea, ceramics or little thing you’ve been thinking about all week.
Then, eventually, it’s time to say goodbye. Kyoto is especially close to us — it’s where the idea of Beyond Tokyo was born. We hope you leave having fallen for a little of the Kyoto we love too.
Or perhaps Japan isn’t quite finished with you yet — sacred forests in Nara, summer beside Lake Biwa, Osaka, or somewhere completely new.

Say hello to the calm, friendly faces who’ll welcome you in Japan — and be with you throughout your journey.
Hi, I’m Abhay. My relationship with Japan began while I was studying at the University of Cambridge and has grown through years of returning, exploring and building friendships across the country. What keeps drawing me back are the neighbourhoods, conversations, traditions and unexpected moments you rarely find on an itinerary — the side of Japan that has shaped how we design every Beyond Tokyo journey.
Hi, I’m Shivani. I’m a dental surgeon by profession, which probably explains why I notice the little things. Over years of travelling through Japan, I’ve come to love the thoughtfulness woven into everyday life — from the way food is presented to the care behind the smallest interactions. On our journeys, I bring that same attention to the people travelling with us — making sure everyone feels comfortable, cared for and free to simply enjoy Japan.

Whether you enjoy quiet moments to yourself or sharing experiences with others, you'll find a comfortable balance throughout the journey.
With a maximum of 10 travellers, our journeys feel personal from the very beginning.
Conversations happen naturally, everyone travels at a similar pace, and it doesn't take long before strangers start feeling like familiar faces.
From the moment you arrive in Japan until it's time to head home, one of our founders is there to guide the journey.
We'll take care of the logistics, help whenever you need us, and give you the freedom to simply enjoy Japan without worrying about the details.

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, and our journeys are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming for solo female travellers. We stay in safe, central neighbourhoods, travel together between destinations, and women are always paired with other women for twin-share accommodation.
No.
Your trip lead takes care of navigation, tickets, restaurant ordering, and day-to-day communication throughout the journey. You'll naturally pick up a few simple Japanese phrases along the way—but there's absolutely no expectation that you speak the language.
We stay in exceptionally top-tier, clean, comfortable, and well-located hotels in safe, central neighbourhoods with excellent access to public transport and local dining.
Hotel rooms in Japan are typically more compact than in Europe or North America, but they're modern, efficient, and exactly where you want to be.
We regularly welcome vegetarian, vegan, Jain, no-egg, and other dietary preferences.
Your trip lead will help with restaurant selection, ordering, and recommendations throughout the journey. While strict Jain options can be more limited in smaller towns, we'll always do our best to help you find suitable meals.
Expect around 8,000–12,000 steps on most days.
We walk at a comfortable pace, take regular breaks, and use Japan's excellent train network to travel between destinations. This is designed to be an enjoyable journey—not a race from one attraction to the next.

Absolutely. Families are always welcome.
Japan is one of the safest, cleanest, and most family-friendly countries in the world.
Our journeys involve regular train travel, public transport, changing hotels and moderate daily walking. Children who are comfortable travelling and exploring tend to adapt very well.
There isn’t a fixed minimum age.
Every child is different. A well-travelled 4-year-old may be perfectly comfortable on the journey, while another child may find the pace more demanding. Parents know their children best, so we leave that decision with you.
Your answer
Little travellers are always welcome.
We don’t believe parents should be financially penalised for bringing a little one along. So we keep our child pricing simple, thoughtful and fair.
