DAY 1 of 11
You’ve landed in Japan. Settle in, meet your fellow travellers and step out into Tokyo for the very first time. Watch the city stretch endlessly beneath you from Shibuya Sky, as daylight fades and millions of lights begin to flicker on below.
As night falls, cross Shibuya with the crowds, wander through colourful Harajuku and tree-lined Omotesando, before finding yourself among the tiny lantern-lit alleys of Shinjuku. Somewhere between your first crossing, your first crepe and dinner together, it finally sinks in: you’re in Japan. And the journey has only just begun.

Tokyo feels different in the morning. Walk beneath the temple gates of Asakusa, through the scent of incense at Senso-ji and past the old shopfronts of Nakamise as the neighbourhood slowly comes to life. Then dive into Ameyoko Market — crowded lanes, market stalls, voices and the everyday energy of Tokyo all around you.
By afternoon, everything changes. Akihabara lights up with neon, arcades and anime culture, before you step barefoot into teamLab Planets — wading through water, wandering through mirrored rooms and watching flowers and light move around you.
From temple streets and market lanes to neon and immersive art, this is Tokyo in all its contrasts.

Today, we go looking for one of Japan’s most unforgettable sights. On a clear day, we head to Lake Kawaguchiko, where Fuji rises above the water and surrounding mountains — the view you’ve imagined long before arriving in Japan.
But Fuji reveals itself on its own terms. If the mountain disappears behind the clouds, we won’t spend the day chasing a view that isn’t there. Instead, we discover Kamakura — ancient temples, the Great Buddha and a charming seaside town along the coast. Either way, we make the most of the day Japan gives us.
Clear skies: Mt Fuji & Lake Kawaguchiko · Cloudy skies: Kamakura, Great Buddha & the coast
This is where Japan begins to feel almost mythical. Deep in the mountains of Togakushi, ancient shrine paths disappear beneath towering cedar trees that have stood for centuries. Walk through the forest towards sacred shrines, surrounded by little more than silence — the kind of Japan you’ve seen in films and wondered if it really exists.
And somehow, the day gets quieter still. As evening settles over Nagano, wander towards Zenko-ji, one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples, after the crowds have begun to disappear. Old temple streets, softly lit lanterns and cool evening air — a world away from the Tokyo you left behind.

Wake up in the Japanese Alps and begin in Hida Furukawa, a little town of white-walled storehouses, quiet streets and canals where colourful carp glide through the water. It’s the kind of place where almost nothing seems to be happening — and somehow, that’s exactly what makes it special.
Then continue to Takayama, where wooden merchant houses and traditional sake breweries bring the region’s history to life. Wander through Sanmachi Old Town, step inside a local brewery and raise a glass of sake in a mountain town that has been brewing it for centuries.

Kanazawa is a city that asks you to slow down. Begin among the ponds, bridges and winding paths of Kenroku-en, before stepping into the old Nagamachi Samurai District, where earthen walls and preserved residences tell stories of the families who once lived here.
Later, wander into Higashi Chaya as the day begins to soften — wooden teahouses, narrow streets and lanterns slowly coming to life around you. And somewhere between gardens and geisha streets, there’s gold-leaf ice cream to try — because apparently, in Kanazawa, even ice cream deserves a little gold.
Kenroku-en Garden · Nagamachi Samurai District · Higashi Chaya · Kanazawa’s gold-leaf ice cream
There’s something about arriving in Kyoto that feels different. The pace slows as you walk into the wooden streets of Higashiyama, past old shopfronts and sloping lanes, before looking out across the city from Kiyomizu-dera.
As daylight fades, lanterns begin to glow through Gion and Kyoto takes on another mood entirely. Then, sit down over matcha and traditional sweets as a Geisha / Maiko performance unfolds just a few feet away — music, dance and centuries-old artistry brought to life in front of you. Afterwards, walk through the quieter streets towards Yasaka Shrine, beautifully illuminated after dark.
Higashiyama & Kiyomizu-dera · Gion after dark · Geisha / Maiko cultural performance · Yasaka Shrine by night
There’s a reward for waking up early in Kyoto. Walk beneath the towering bamboo of Arashiyama before the day gathers pace, then slow down beside the Katsura River and Togetsukyo Bridge, with the mountains rising around you.
By afternoon, Kyoto gets busier — and a lot more delicious. Taste your way through Nishiki Market, wander into smaller streets and neighbourhoods, and end the day somewhere you might not expect — over a steaming bowl of Michelin-starred vegan ramen.
Ancient Kyoto in the morning, modern Kyoto by night — with plenty to taste in between.

Some days feel like several versions of Japan rolled into one. Begin beneath the seemingly endless vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari, following the shrine paths as they disappear into the wooded hills. From there, continue to Nara, where deer wander between ancient temples and forest paths, and the enormous bronze Buddha of Todai-ji waits inside one of Japan’s great wooden halls.
By late afternoon, everything slows down in Uji. Wander centuries-old tea streets, sit down for matcha at a historic tea house and end beside the Uji River, as the light softens and the town quietens around you.
After a day of grand shrines and temples, sometimes it’s the smaller, quieter moments that stay with you.
Fushimi Inari · Todai-ji & Nara Deer Park · Uji’s historic tea streets · Traditional matcha tasting
After Kyoto’s temples and quiet streets, Osaka turns the volume up. Retro signs and old-school neighbourhood energy greet you in Shinsekai, before the city pulls you towards Dotonbori — neon reflecting off the canal, giant signboards overhead, packed streets and the smell of food everywhere.
Tonight, we experience Japan’s kitchen the best way we know how — by eating our way through it. Taste Osaka favourites along the streets, wander through the neon after dark and come together for our farewell dinner. After ten days across Japan, this is the night to eat, laugh and raise a glass to the journey we’ve shared.
Shinsekai · Dotonbori after dark · Osaka street-food walk · Farewell dinner
One last day in Japan — and this one is yours. Go back for that dish you’ve been thinking about, pick up the things you promised yourself you’d buy later, wander into a neighbourhood you haven’t seen yet — or simply slow down and enjoy Osaka one last time.
If you’re not quite ready for it to end, spend the day inside the worlds of Universal Studios Japan, or extend your journey to Hiroshima & Miyajima for a completely different final chapter.
And then, eventually, it’s time to head home. Eleven days ago, Tokyo was unfamiliar. Since then there have been mountain shrines and tiny towns, sake and matcha, bamboo forests, neon nights — and all the little moments in between that no itinerary could ever quite capture.
You came to see Japan. We hope you leave having fallen for a little of the Japan we love.
Say hello to the calm, friendly faces who’ll welcome you in Japan — and be with you throughout your journey.
Hi, I’m Abhay. My relationship with Japan began while I was studying at the University of Cambridge and has grown through years of returning, exploring and building friendships across the country. What keeps drawing me back are the neighbourhoods, conversations, traditions and unexpected moments you rarely find on an itinerary — the side of Japan that has shaped how we design every Beyond Tokyo journey.
Hi, I’m Shivani. I’m a dental surgeon by profession, which probably explains why I notice the little things. Over years of travelling through Japan, I’ve come to love the thoughtfulness woven into everyday life — from the way food is presented to the care behind the smallest interactions. On our journeys, I bring that same attention to the people travelling with us — making sure everyone feels comfortable, cared for and free to simply enjoy Japan.

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, and our journeys are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming for solo female travellers. We stay in safe, central neighbourhoods, travel together between destinations, and women are always paired with other women for twin-share accommodation.
No.
Your trip lead takes care of navigation, tickets, restaurant ordering, and day-to-day communication throughout the journey. You'll naturally pick up a few simple Japanese phrases along the way—but there's absolutely no expectation that you speak the language.
We stay in exceptionally top-tier, clean, comfortable, and well-located hotels in safe, central neighbourhoods with excellent access to public transport and local dining.

Absolutely. Families are always welcome.
Japan is one of the safest, cleanest, and most family-friendly countries in the world.
Our journeys involve regular train travel, public transport, changing hotels and moderate daily walking. Children who are comfortable travelling and exploring tend to adapt very well.
There isn’t a fixed minimum age.
Every child is different. A well-travelled 4-year-old may be perfectly comfortable on the journey, while another child may find the pace more demanding. Parents know their children best, so we leave that decision with you.
Little travellers are always welcome.
We don’t believe parents should be financially penalised for bringing a little one along. So we keep our child pricing simple, thoughtful and fair.
Pricing is based on the child’s age at the time of travel.
